Cooperation with LeadershipMaturity.ai 

Adult development research suggests that individuals progress through a series of stages, each characterized by increasingly adaptive and integrated ways of perceiving self and world, and increased ability to navigate challenges of life and leadership.

LeadershipMaturity.ai is the most accurate AI model developed so far, based on the largest training set (over 80,000 test responses) and some of the most sophisticated psychological modeling and natural language processing approaches in recent research.

More about our methodology: Can a machine read maturity? 

A specialised computational psychometrics platform can now score an established assessment of adult development about as reliably as trained experts.  

For six decades, assessing adult ego development—how we make sense of ourselves and the world—has meant trained experts reading and scoring thirty-six sentence completions. Scorer certification takes at least two years, and scoring each assessment requires hours of expert work. This has limited how widely the method can be used. 

A paper published in Frontiers in Psychology in August 2026 by Tamas Madl and Susanne Cook-Greuter describes an automated approach reaching comparable reliability. It uses scoring criteria refined by an evolutionary algorithm and grouped into interpretable maturity indicators.  

In an evaluation involving 851 assessments, the system matched Dr. Cook-Greuter’s stage ratings exactly in 86.1% of cases. Two leading general-purpose AI models given the full scoring manual achieved 40–45%. A separate, mutually blinded comparison on 47 assessments found 85.1% agreement with an independent expert scorer. Harvard Medical School researchers independently verified the comparison’s procedures and results.  

Through the Human Maturity Project, IFIS Freiburg is collaborating with LeadershipMaturity.ai. We plan to use these assessments in projects ranging from leadership development to politics and governance.

All data is processed by custom models on self-hosted infrastructure certified SOC 2 Type II, GDPR and HIPAA compliant.
